GitHub's changelog for 19 October 2026 says six models are deprecated across most Copilot experiences, including chat, inline edits, ask mode, agent mode, and code completions. GitHub had announced the deprecations on 18 September 2026. The suggested replacements are Gemini 3.8 Flash for Gemini 3.7 Flash, GPT-6.1 Sol for GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4, GPT-6 Luna for GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5 mini, and Grok 4.7 for Grok 4.5.
GitHub says no action is required to remove the old models. Enterprise admins may need to enable the replacements in Copilot model policies before they show up in the model picker in VS Code and on github.com. The same day, GitHub opened GET and PATCH endpoints for those policies at enterprise, enterprise-team, enterprise-app, and organization level. The model policy API note (opens in a new tab) is the reference.
Who it's for: anyone who pinned one of those six model ids in Copilot, and enterprise admins who manage model access.
Fits: Best for Vibe Coding. Copilot stays fourth. The editorial rank is about the edit loop teams already pay for, and these are older model ids with current replacements.
