Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot

Which AI tool should I use? Three questions, then a pick from the ranked lists.

Claude Code and GitHub Copilot are the two names that show up when someone already has a repository and has not decided whether the job is a plan or a completion. They are not the same tool. On Best for Vibe Coding the editorial order is Cursor, then Claude Code, then OpenAI Codex, then GitHub Copilot, then Replit. This page is the head-to-head. Cursor, Codex, and Replit stay on the list for an editor diff, a cloud sandbox, and a blank folder.
The verdict: open Claude Code (opens in a new tab) when the job is "go do this in the repo" from a terminal, and you do not need inline diffs as the main interface. Open GitHub Copilot (opens in a new tab) when the company already pays for the seat and the edit is routine. Check current pricing. We are not quoting a plan, a completion limit, or a benchmark. None of those numbers are in the ranking.
The full five-tool walk is Best AI tool for coding. The page that starts from Claude Code is Claude Code alternatives. The page that starts from Copilot is GitHub Copilot alternatives. The editor pair is Cursor vs Claude Code. The sandbox pair is Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex. The three-way that includes Copilot and not Claude Code is GitHub Copilot vs OpenAI Codex vs Cursor. Which ranked tools list a free plan is Which AI is free to use. This page does not copy that rate card.
Claude Code, when the terminal is the interface
Claude Code is second. The tagline is a terminal coding agent from Anthropic. It is the better fit when the job is "go do this in the repo" from a terminal, not a completion popping up as you type. It plans well across a large codebase. It is the wrong pick if you want inline diffs as the main interface.
Use that as a workflow. If you already think in a shell, Claude Code matches the sentence. If you wanted a one-line completion in the IDE the company already pays for, you wanted Copilot. The rank stays at 2 because the list treats the interface as the difference. Planning well across a large codebase does not move it into the company seat, and a reliable completion does not become a terminal plan. Claude the chat model, first on the writing list, is a different product. The writing alternatives are Claude alternatives. A good draft is not a diff.
Copilot, when the seat is already paid for
GitHub Copilot is fourth. The tagline is the coding assistant most teams already have a seat for. It is still the seat most teams already pay for. Inline completions are reliable, and agent mode now covers routine edits. It is not the strongest autonomous coder on this list, which is why the editorial rank stays at 4.
Stay when the constraint is that seat and the edit is routine. Leave when the change spans the project and the thing you will review is a terminal plan. Copilot is the wrong substitute for that plan. Claude Code is the wrong substitute for a one-line completion in the IDE the company already has. Rank 4 is that boundary. The list says the completions are reliable, and that this is not the strongest autonomous coder here.
What this page is not
Cursor is first. The tagline is an editor with an agent that edits across files. It is the closest thing to a default when the agent has to live in the editor. It can take a multi-file change, apply it, and let you reject hunks without leaving the project. Vague prompts still send it wandering, and it will spend tokens proving it. If the review is a diff in the editor, you have left this pair. The page is Cursor vs Claude Code.
OpenAI Codex is third. The tagline is a coding agent that can work in a cloud sandbox. It is useful when the task should run away from your laptop. On 8 October 2026 OpenAI added an Ultrafast service tier for gpt-6.1-sol in the Responses API, which shortens the wait between output tokens if you call that model directly. The note is OpenAI adds Ultrafast mode for GPT-6.1 Sol. Ultrafast does not decide Claude Code versus Copilot. The page that starts from Codex is OpenAI Codex alternatives.
Replit Agent is fifth. The tagline is that it builds and hosts an app from a prompt. It is the fastest path from a sentence to a hosted app when you are starting from an empty folder, and the wrong tool for a private codebase you already maintain. The page that starts from Replit is Replit alternatives.
Which sentence you are in

"I will look at a diff in the editor and reject hunks" is Cursor, first on Best for Vibe Coding. "Run it away from the laptop" is Codex. "There is no project yet" is Replit.
If you cannot name the artifact you will review, you do not have a comparison yet. The profiles are Claude Code and GitHub Copilot. The order is the list. Check current pricing before you buy a plan. The rank will not tell you the invoice.
