GitHub Copilot vs OpenAI Codex vs Cursor

Last updated

GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, and Cursor get asked about as if they were three settings of one product. They are not. One is the seat most companies already bought. One is a cloud agent with a GitHub loop. One is an agent that lives in the editor and shows you the diff. The editorial order on Best for Vibe Coding is Cursor, then Claude Code, then Codex, then Copilot, then Replit. This page is only the three in the question. Claude Code and Replit are on the same list, and the longer walk is Best AI tool for coding. The 2026 assistant framing is Best AI coding assistant in 2026.

We did not run a shared benchmark, and we are not quoting a subscription price for any of the three. Where a dated API fact matters, it is linked to the vendor's own note.

Cursor, when the diff is the point

Cursor (opens in a new tab) is the first editorial pick when the agent has to live in the editor. It can take a multi-file change, apply it, and let you reject hunks without leaving the project. That is the loop to choose when you are already in the codebase and you want to see what changed before anything is committed. The failure mode is a vague prompt. The agent wanders, and it will spend tokens proving it. If you cannot describe the change in a sentence a teammate would understand, none of these three will save the session. Cursor is the wrong comparison when you want the work to run on a machine you are not looking at.

Codex, when the laptop should be closed

OpenAI Codex (opens in a new tab) is third. It is a capable agent with a cloud sandbox and a GitHub loop, useful when the task should run away from your laptop. You hand it a job, it works in the cloud, and the thing you review is closer to a pull request than to a hunk in the file you have open. That is a real product difference, not a slower Cursor. Inside an editor you already have open, Cursor is still the tighter edit-and-reject loop.

On 8 October 2026 OpenAI added an Ultrafast service tier for gpt-6.1-sol in the Responses API, which shortens the wait between output tokens if you call that model directly. The changelog note is OpenAI adds Ultrafast mode for GPT-6.1 Sol. Ultrafast is available to API users, subject to rate limits, with global processing and US and EU data residency. It is not a new Codex interface. It does not move Codex above Cursor for in-editor review, and it does not make Copilot's completions faster. If you are comparing the three products, leave Ultrafast in the API column.

A separate OpenAI change from 7 October 2026 is the ChatGPT rollout of GPT-6 Intelligent UI, where a reply can include text plus charts, buttons, and small tools. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. That note is GPT-6 Intelligent UI rolls out in ChatGPT. The models behind Work and Codex did not change with that release. Do not treat a ChatGPT interface update as a Codex update.

Copilot, when the seat is the constraint

GitHub Copilot (opens in a new tab) is fourth. It is still the seat most teams already pay for. Inline completions are reliable, and agent mode covers routine edits. It is not the strongest autonomous coder on this list, which is why the editorial rank stays at 4. Copilot wins the comparison when the constraint is the license the company already has and the edit is local and small. It loses the comparison when the job is a multi-file change you want to accept or reject hunk by hunk in the editor, which is Cursor, or a task that should run in a cloud sandbox against GitHub, which is Codex.

Nobody has paid for a Featured placement on this site. Copilot's rank is the editorial rank. A featured flag would move a tool to the top of the display without changing the number. That flag is off.

Which sentence you are in

If the sentence is "I am in the editor and I want a diff," take Cursor. If the sentence is "run this while I am away and leave a GitHub trail," take Codex. If the sentence is "we already have Copilot and this is a routine edit," stay there. If the sentence is "I want a terminal plan" or "I am starting from an empty folder," you have left this three-way comparison. Use the full list on Best for Vibe Coding.

Questions people ask

Which is better, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, or Cursor?
On this site's coding list, Cursor is first when the agent has to live in the editor. Codex is third, for a cloud sandbox and a GitHub loop. Copilot is fourth, the seat many teams already pay for.
Does Ultrafast mode make Codex the better editor?
No. Ultrafast is a Responses API tier for gpt-6.1-sol that shortens the wait between output tokens. Inside an editor you already have open, Cursor is still the tighter edit-and-reject loop.
Should a team that already pays for Copilot switch?
Not for a one-line fix. Copilot is fine for inline completions and routine edits. Switch the session to Cursor when the change spans the project and you want to reject hunks without leaving the editor.
Where do Claude Code and Replit fit?
They are on the same coding list, second and fifth. This page is only the three-way comparison. The full walk is Best AI tool for coding.
