Cursor vs OpenAI Codex

Updated

Which AI tool should I use? Three questions, then a pick from the ranked lists.

Cursor and OpenAI Codex get asked about as if one of them were the coding assistant and the other were a slower copy. They win different jobs. On Best for Vibe Coding the editorial order is Cursor, then Claude Code, then OpenAI Codex, then GitHub Copilot, then Replit. This page is the editor against the cloud sandbox. Claude Code stays the terminal. Copilot stays the company seat. Replit stays the empty folder.

The verdict: open Cursor (opens in a new tab) when the agent has to live in the editor, take a multi-file change, and let you reject hunks without leaving the project. Open OpenAI Codex (opens in a new tab) when the task should run away from your laptop, with a cloud sandbox and a GitHub loop. This page does not quote a subscription price, and it does not invent a benchmark. Neither tool is marked as having a free plan on this site. Check current pricing before you buy.

The full five-tool walk is Best AI tool for coding. The three-way with the company seat is GitHub Copilot vs OpenAI Codex vs Cursor. The editor against the terminal is Cursor vs Claude Code. The terminal against the sandbox is Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex. The page that starts from Cursor is Cursor alternatives. The page that starts from Codex is OpenAI Codex alternatives.

Cursor, when the diff is the point

Cursor is first. The tagline is an editor with an agent that edits across files. It is the closest thing to a default when the agent has to live in the editor. It can take a multi-file change, apply it, and let you reject hunks without leaving the project. Vague prompts still send it wandering, and it will spend tokens proving it.

Describe the change, look at the diff, keep the good parts. If you cannot describe the change in a sentence a teammate would understand, a stronger model will not save the session. Cursor is the wrong comparison when you want the work to run on a machine you are not looking at. A coding assistant, on this list, is that editor seat.

Codex, when the laptop should be closed

OpenAI Codex is third. The tagline is a coding agent that can work in a cloud sandbox. It is a capable agent with a cloud sandbox and a GitHub loop, useful when the task should run away from your laptop. On 8 October 2026 OpenAI added an Ultrafast service tier for gpt-6.1-sol in the Responses API, which shortens the wait between output tokens if you call that model directly. That detail is in OpenAI adds Ultrafast mode for GPT-6.1 Sol. Inside an editor you already have open, Cursor is still the tighter edit-and-reject loop.

Ultrafast is an API option. It does not turn Codex into a different product, and it does not move Codex above Cursor for in-editor review. You hand Codex a job, it works in the cloud, and the thing you review is closer to a pull request than to a hunk in the file you have open. That is a real product difference, not a slower Cursor. Leave Cursor for Codex when the laptop should be closed. Stay in Cursor when you want to see the diff before anything is committed.

What this page is not

Claude Code is second. The tagline is a terminal coding agent from Anthropic. It is the better fit when the job is "go do this in the repo" from a terminal, not a completion popping up as you type. It plans well across a large codebase. It is the wrong pick if you want inline diffs as the main interface. The page that starts from Claude Code is Claude Code alternatives. The head-to-head with Codex is Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex.

GitHub Copilot is fourth. The tagline is the coding assistant most teams already have a seat for. It is still the seat most teams already pay for. Inline completions are reliable, and agent mode now covers routine edits. On 28 October 2026 Copilot Fusion became generally available, and paid plans gained a connected cloud session that runs in a sandbox. GitHub's Coding Agent Index figure for Fusion Max does not move this rank. It is not the in-editor reject-hunk loop, which is why the editorial rank stays at 4. The head-to-head with the editor is Cursor vs GitHub Copilot.

Replit Agent is fifth. The tagline is that it builds and hosts an app from a prompt. It is the fastest path from a sentence to a hosted app when you are starting from an empty folder. It is the wrong tool for a private codebase you already maintain. The page that starts from Replit is Replit alternatives.

Which sentence you are in

"I am in the editor and I want a diff I can reject hunk by hunk" is Cursor. "Run this while I am away and leave a GitHub trail" is Codex. "Go do this in the repo from a terminal" is Claude Code. "We already have Copilot and this is a routine edit" is Copilot. "I am starting from an empty folder and I want something hosted" is Replit. Name the artifact you will review before you name the brand. Check Cursor (opens in a new tab) and OpenAI Codex (opens in a new tab) before you pay. The rank will not tell you the invoice.
