Midjourney vs Flux vs ChatGPT for images

Midjourney, Flux, and ChatGPT Images get compared as if one of them were the best picture-maker. They win different jobs. On Best for Images the editorial order of these three is Midjourney, then Flux, then ChatGPT. Adobe Firefly and Ideogram sit further down that list for commercial caution and for type. This page is only the three people type into a search box.

The verdict: open Midjourney (opens in a new tab) when the picture should look considered before you have fought the prompt. Open Flux (opens in a new tab) when you already know the instruction and the model has to follow it, including when you need weights you can run. Open ChatGPT (opens in a new tab) when the image belongs in a conversation you are already having, the instruction is fussy, or the words in the picture have to be read. The longer walk of all five image tools is Best AI image generator.

Midjourney, for taste

Midjourney is the first editorial pick because it is still the aesthetic default. Composition out of the box beats most rivals on this list, especially for concept frames and photography-like images. If you want a frame that looks composed and you do not yet have a shot list, start here.

The limits are part of the rank, not a footnote. Prompting is its own dialect, so a prompt that works in Flux or ChatGPT may not. Text inside the image is a gamble. It is not a production asset pipeline. Use it when the picture is the deliverable. Do not use it when the deliverable is a locked layout, a logo, or a line of type a client will spell-check.

Flux, for the instruction

Flux, from Black Forest Labs, is second. On this list it is the best prompt adherence among the widely used image models, and the open weights matter if you need to run or fine-tune a model. The official playground is plainer than Midjourney. You bring your own taste.

That is the product decision in one sentence. If you already know the composition and another model keeps dropping a constraint, try Flux. If you do not know what you want until you see something beautiful, Midjourney will waste less of the afternoon. We are not publishing a benchmark score for "prompt adherence." The rank is an editorial judgment about the job, not a table of percentages. Which Flux checkpoints you can download is a fact that moves. Check Black Forest Labs rather than trusting an old screenshot.

ChatGPT, for the conversation

ChatGPT is third on the image list. Use it when the image has to follow a fussy instruction, include readable text, or match a conversation you are already having. It is less beautiful by default than Midjourney. That is a fair trade when you are iterating in chat: describe the change, look at the next image, change one thing. It is a poor trade when the only goal is a frame that looks considered with almost no direction.

Readable text is why ChatGPT is the one of these three to try for a label or a short headline. It is still not the type specialist. Ideogram (opens in a new tab) is fifth on the same list for posters, logos, and mockups where the spelling is the job. If the words are the product, go there after you have seen what chat can do.

ChatGPT the image tool is not Gemini, and it is not Gemini 4 Argon. Argon, generally available on 13 October 2026, is a frontier model for hard coding, science, and agent work. That release is Gemini 4 Argon is generally available. The image ranking also notes that Google's fast image model is a different product. This page does not fold those into the three-way comparison.

Which sentence you are in

If the sentence is "make it look like a photograph someone composed," take Midjourney. If the sentence is "follow this instruction, and I may want to run the weights," take Flux. If the sentence is "I am already in this chat, and the picture has to match what we just said," take ChatGPT. If the sentence is "the words must be spelled correctly on a poster," leave this trio and use Ideogram on Best for Images.

Prices are not part of the rank. Check current pricing before you pick a plan.
