n8n vs Zapier for AI agents

Last updated

n8n and Zapier both get asked about when a team wants an AI step inside a workflow they already understand. They are not the same kind of product, and only one of them is on our list. n8n (opens in a new tab) is the first editorial pick on Best Agent Builder: triggers, branches, and a human approval step are first-class, and you can self-host. Zapier is not ranked here. This page says what each company documents, and it stops where the docs stop. We are not quoting a price for either product. The tool-by-tool walk of the ranked builders is Best AI agent builder. A plural roundup that also separates builders from new models is Best AI agent builders.

What n8n documents

n8n's AI Agent node (opens in a new tab) is how you build an agent inside a workflow. You connect a chat model and one or more tools, and the agent decides which tools to call to complete a task. The docs say you must connect at least one tool sub-node. The older agent-type setting is deprecated from n8n 1.82.0. Current AI Agent nodes work as a Tools Agent. n8n says the version of the node that still has the agent-type setting will be removed in n8n 3.0, and that an older workflow already set to Tools Agent keeps working. For something like an SQL agent, the docs say to use a database tool sub-node with a recent Agent node instead of the old type switch.

That node sits in a workflow product. The reason n8n is first on our list is the shape around the node: a trigger, a branch, and a place for a person to stop the risky step. The agent is a step. It is not the whole operating model.

Self-hosting is documented, not implied. n8n's hosting guide (opens in a new tab) says you can run it on your own infrastructure, on-premises, or in a private cloud, with Docker Compose, a one-line setup, or other methods. Without a license key it runs as the free Community edition. A Business or Enterprise key enables those editions. We are not copying the edition matrix into this page. The fact that matters for the comparison is that a self-hosted option exists in the vendor's own docs, including an AI starter kit for a self-hosted setup. Take that option when the data should not leave, and only if someone will patch the instance.

What Zapier documents

Zapier's help article Migrating from Agents to AI by Zapier (opens in a new tab), updated 1 October 2026, says Zapier is moving Agents at agents.zapier.com into AI by Zapier, inside the Zap editor. Zapier says it has not set a date to turn Agents off, and that it will email affected users before changes happen. Conversion is automatic. Each agent becomes a Zap with a native trigger and a single AI by Zapier step that holds the original prompt, tool calls, and reasoning. Zapier says you do not have to rebuild from scratch, and that moving each tool call out into its own Zap step is optional.

The companion page, Add tools to your AI by Zapier step (opens in a new tab), says tools let that step use other apps instead of only writing a completion. Examples Zapier gives are looking up a record in a CRM, sending a Slack message, or adding a spreadsheet row. Tools are optional. If you add none, the step stays prompt-only. Zapier says the step decides which tools to call and how many times. The same migration article says some knowledge sources that Agents had, including HubSpot, Asana, Zendesk, Zoom, and Jira, are not yet supported in AI by Zapier, with support planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Read that as a product in motion. The agent is being folded into a Zap step. It is not a graph you self-host, and Zapier's docs do not describe a Community edition you run on your own machine. We are not scoring Zapier on our list, because we have not put it through the same editorial pass as the five ranked builders.

How to choose

Choose n8n when the sentence is "this process needs a trigger, a branch, a human stop, and we may need to run it ourselves." That is why it is rank 1 on Best Agent Builder. Choose Zapier's path when the sentence is "the work already lives in Zaps, and the agent should be a step in that editor," and check the migration note if you still have an agent on agents.zapier.com. If you need a tested graph an engineer owns, or a company assistant over internal docs, you have left this pair. Those are LangGraph and Dust on the same ranking.

Questions people ask

Is n8n or Zapier the better AI agent builder?
n8n is the first editorial pick on Best Agent Builder for a team that already thinks in workflows, including a self-hosted option. Zapier is not on that list. Zapier's own help says it is moving Agents into an AI by Zapier step inside a Zap.
Can I self-host the agent workflow?
n8n's hosting docs say you can self-host on your own infrastructure, on-premises, or in a private cloud. Without a license key it runs as the free Community edition. This guide does not quote Zapier or n8n prices.
Did Zapier shut Agents down?
Not according to Zapier's migration guide, updated 1 October 2026. Zapier says it has not set a date to turn Agents off, and that it converts an agent into a Zap with a trigger and one AI by Zapier step.
Where is the rest of the agent list?
LangGraph, Dust, CrewAI, and Relevance AI are on Best Agent Builder. This page is only n8n against Zapier's documented agent path.
