GitHub Agentic Workflows is generally available

Markdown workflows compile to GitHub Actions and run a coding agent for triage, CI failures, docs, and tests. Copilot is the default engine.

GitHub's changelog for 28 October 2026 says GitHub Agentic Workflows, an open source project from GitHub Next, is generally available on github.com for GitHub Free, Team, and Enterprise. You describe the automation in Markdown. GitHub compiles that file into Actions YAML and runs a coding agent inside GitHub Actions, for work such as issue triage, CI failure analysis, documentation updates, and test writing. The default engine is GitHub Copilot CLI, which requires a Copilot license. You can bring another coding agent.

GitHub says agents read GitHub content through integrity filter rules, start with read-only permissions, and run in a sandboxed container behind the Agent Workflow Firewall. Outputs go through a safe-outputs process, and a threat-detection job scans proposed changes before they are applied. The general-availability note also lists self-hosted Actions Runner Controller support with Docker-in-Docker, a stable gh aw forecast command that includes threat-detection credits, per-workflow model providers, a model router, and optional isolation in a Cloud Hypervisor or NVX micro-VM.

Who it's for: a team that wants a coding agent on a GitHub Actions schedule or event, with the repository's existing runner policy still in force.

Fits: Best Agent Builder stays n8n, for a workflow a team already thinks in. Agentic Workflows is a GitHub Actions compiler, not that product. GitHub Copilot stays fourth on Best for Vibe Coding when it is the engine. The agent builder guide is unchanged. The verdicts are unchanged.
