Claude vs Grammarly

Last updated

Which AI tool should I use? Three questions, then a pick from the ranked lists.

Claude and Grammarly are the two names that show up when someone wants help with a sentence and has not decided whether the sentence exists yet. They are not the same tool. On Best for Writing the editorial order is Claude, then ChatGPT, then Gemini, then Grammarly, then Notion AI. This page is the head-to-head. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Notion AI stay on the list for a generalist rewrite, a Google file, and a page that already lives in Notion.

The verdict: open Claude (opens in a new tab) when the page is blank, or the draft has to sound like a person. Open Grammarly (opens in a new tab) when the words already exist and the job is tone, clarity, and grammar. Check current pricing. We are not quoting a plan. Neither a rate card nor a quality score is in the ranking.

The full five-tool walk is Best AI writing tool. The email cut of the same list is Best AI tool for writing emails. The page that starts from Claude is Claude alternatives. The page that starts from Grammarly is Grammarly alternatives. The three-way of the chat models, which does not include the editor, is ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini. Which of the ranked tools list a free plan is Which AI is free to use. This page does not copy that rate card.

Claude, when the voice is the job

Claude is first. The tagline is Anthropic's chat model. It is still the one to open for a long draft that has to sound like a person. Claude Haiku 5.5, launched 7 October 2026, is the cheap high-volume model in the same family, not the reason this rank exists. The note is Anthropic Claude Haiku 5.5 announcement. Claude is weaker when the job is searching the web and citing this afternoon's news.

Use that as a writing job, not a slogan. If the reader can tell the voice is wrong, Claude is the first pick on this list. If you already have the sentences and you want them checked, you wanted Grammarly. A small model in the same family does not turn Claude into an editor, and an editor does not become the draft because you asked it to write. The rank stays at 1 because the list treats the voice of the piece as the difference. Citing this afternoon's news is a research job. The research list starts with Perplexity, not with either name on this page.

Grammarly, when the draft exists

Grammarly is fourth. The tagline is an editor for clarity, tone, and grammar. Use it to catch tone, clarity, and grammar on text you already wrote. Generating the piece from scratch is not why it earns a spot.

That limit is the comparison. Stay when the words exist and the last pass is the job, including a last pass on a draft Claude wrote. Leave when the page is blank. An editor cannot be the alternative to a missing paragraph. Rank 4 is not a claim that the check is unimportant. It is a claim that the check is a different product from the writer. Do not expect Grammarly to sound like a person on a page that has not been written. The list has already named Claude for that sentence.

What this page is not

ChatGPT is second. The tagline is OpenAI's general-purpose chat model. It is still the generalist for drafts and rewrites. The default voice is still even, and a careful draft still wants an edit. If you want a rewrite you will edit, you have left this pair. The page that starts from ChatGPT is ChatGPT alternatives.

Gemini is third. The tagline is Google's chat model, next to Docs and Gmail. It is convenient when the draft lives next to Gmail and Docs. For ordinary prose the voice is still flatter than Claude. Use it when the file is already in Google. The page that starts from Gemini is Gemini alternatives.

Notion AI is fifth. The tagline is writing help inside a Notion doc. It is worth it when the document is already in Notion and you want a summary, a rewrite, or a messy page cleaned up in place. It is a poor standalone writing tool. A Notion page is a different container from a grammar pass. The page that starts from Notion AI is Notion AI alternatives.

Which sentence you are in

"The draft has to sound like a person" is Claude. "The sentences exist and I want tone, clarity, and grammar" is Grammarly. "A generalist rewrite I will edit" is ChatGPT, second on Best for Writing. "The file is already in Gmail or Docs" is Gemini. "The page is already in Notion" is Notion AI.

If you cannot say whether the words exist, you do not have a comparison yet. The profiles are Claude and Grammarly. The order is the list. Check current pricing before you buy a plan. The rank will not tell you the invoice.

Questions people ask

Should I use Claude or Grammarly?
On Best for Writing, Claude is first for a long draft that has to sound like a person. Grammarly is fourth, an editor for tone, clarity, and grammar on text you already wrote. Generating the piece is not why Grammarly is on the list.
Can Grammarly replace Claude for a blank page?
No. The writing verdict calls Grammarly an editor, not a writer. If there is no draft yet, the list points at Claude, then ChatGPT, then Gemini. Grammarly is the last pass.
When should I bring a Claude draft back to Grammarly?
When the sentences exist and you still want tone, clarity, and grammar checked. Claude is weaker when the job is searching the web and citing this afternoon's news. An editor does not fix a missing source.
Where do ChatGPT, Gemini, and Notion AI fit?
They are on the same writing list, second, third, and fifth. ChatGPT is the generalist rewrite, Gemini is convenient next to Gmail and Docs, and Notion AI is for a page that already lives in Notion. This page is only Claude against Grammarly.
