Grammarly alternatives

Someone searching for a Grammarly alternative is usually asking a writer to do an editor's job, or the reverse. Grammarly is fourth on Best for Writing. The verdict is an editor, not a writer. Use it to catch tone, clarity, and grammar on text you already wrote. Generating the piece from scratch is not why it earns a spot. The other tools on that list are the alternatives: Claude for a draft that has to sound like a person, ChatGPT for a generalist rewrite, Gemini when the file is already next to Gmail and Docs, Notion AI when the page is already in Notion. This guide does not invent a quality score. Grammarly's own plans page lists a Free plan at $0, with 100 AI prompts a month, and a Pro plan. Check that page for the current price. This guide does not copy the rest of the rate card.
The writing walk, starting from the job, is Best AI writing tool. The page that starts from Claude is Claude alternatives.
Stay with Grammarly
Stay when the draft exists and the job is the last pass. The line on this site is an editor for clarity, tone, and grammar. Use Grammarly (opens in a new tab) after you, or another tool, have written the sentences. Leave when there is no draft yet. An editor cannot be the alternative to a blank page. A free plan on Grammarly's site covers writing without spelling and grammar mistakes, and a limited number of AI prompts. That is still an editor with a small generation allowance, not the reason the rank exists.
Write the draft
Claude is first for writing. It is still the one to open for a long draft that has to sound like a person. Claude Haiku 5.5, launched 7 October 2026, is the cheap high-volume model in the same family, not the reason this rank exists. Claude is weaker when the job is searching the web and citing this afternoon's news. If you left Grammarly because you needed the piece written, Claude (opens in a new tab) is the alternative. Bring the result back to an editor if you still want the grammar pass. Do not expect Claude to be a spelling checker with a better logo.
A generalist rewrite
ChatGPT is second. It is still the generalist for drafts and rewrites. As of the 7 October 2026 rollout, ChatGPT can answer with GPT-6 Intelligent UI: text plus charts, buttons, and small tools in the reply. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. The models behind Work and Codex did not change with that release. The default voice is still even, and a careful draft still wants an edit. The note is GPT-6 brings Intelligent UI to ChatGPT.
Use ChatGPT (opens in a new tab) when you want a rewrite and you will edit the even voice. Grammarly is what you might use after that edit, not instead of deciding what the paragraph says. The page that starts from ChatGPT is ChatGPT alternatives.
Next to the inbox
Gemini is third. It is convenient when the draft lives next to Gmail and Docs. For ordinary prose the voice is still flatter than Claude. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can also use Gemini 4 Argon here. Argon is the 13 October 2026 frontier model for hard coding, science, and agent work, not a grammar product. Use Gemini (opens in a new tab) when the words have to stay in a Google file. Use Grammarly when the words exist and you want them checked. The page that starts from Gemini is Gemini alternatives.
Already in Notion
Notion AI is fifth. It is worth it when the document is already in Notion and you want a summary, a rewrite, or a messy page cleaned up in place. It is a poor standalone writing tool. Use Notion AI (opens in a new tab) when the page is already there. Do not open it as a Grammarly replacement for a doc that lives in email. A Notion page is a different container. Grammarly's job is the sentences. Notion AI's job is the page you already keep there.
How to choose
If the sentences exist and you want tone, clarity, and grammar, stay with Grammarly. If the page is blank and the voice matters, open Claude. If you want a generalist rewrite you will edit, open ChatGPT. If the file is already in Gmail or Docs, Gemini is the convenient writer, not the checker. If the page is already in Notion, use Notion AI. An editor and a writer are different ranks on Best for Writing. The profiles are linked above.
