Claude vs Gemini

Updated

Which AI tool should I use? Three questions, then a pick from the ranked lists.

Someone comparing Claude and Gemini is usually deciding whether the draft has to sound like a person or whether it has to stay in a Google file. On Best for Writing the editorial order is Claude, then ChatGPT, then Gemini, then Grammarly, then Notion AI. This page is the two-tool cut. ChatGPT stays the generalist you will edit. Grammarly stays the last pass. Notion AI stays the page that already lives in Notion.

The verdict: open Claude (opens in a new tab) when tone is the deliverable. Open Gemini (opens in a new tab) when the draft lives next to Gmail and Docs. Both are marked as having a free plan on this site. This page does not quote a dollar amount, a token rate, or a quality score.

The full five-tool walk is Best AI writing tool. The three-way with ChatGPT is ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini. The two-tool cut of the first two ranks is ChatGPT vs Claude. The pair of ChatGPT and Gemini is ChatGPT vs Gemini. The page that starts from Claude is Claude alternatives. The page that starts from Gemini is Gemini alternatives. The long-draft job is Best AI tool for a long draft.

Leave Gemini when the voice is the point

Claude is first. The tagline is Anthropic's chat model. It is still the one to open for a long draft that has to sound like a person. Claude Haiku 5.5, launched 7 October 2026, is the cheap high-volume model in the same family, not the reason this rank exists. The note is Claude Haiku 5.5 is Anthropic's new small model. Claude is weaker when the job is searching the web and citing this afternoon's news.

Use Claude when a careful note, a long draft, or a rewrite has to sound like someone. Leave it when the file is already in Google and you will not paste. Haiku 5.5 does not replace that choice. A smaller model is for volume, not automatically for voice. If the deliverable is sourced research, use Best for Research. If the deliverable is prose, start with Claude.

Leave Claude when the file is already in Google

Gemini is third. The tagline is Google's chat model, next to Docs and Gmail. It is convenient when the draft lives next to Gmail and Docs. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can also use Gemini 4 Argon here, the 13 October 2026 frontier model for hard coding, science, and agent work. For ordinary prose the voice is still flatter than Claude. The note is Gemini 4 Argon is generally available.

That convenience is the argument for writing the email or the memo there: the thread is already open, and you are not pasting between tabs. Argon is the model you reach for when the "draft" is really a hard problem. It is not a reason to move a normal memo off Claude. If the words have to sound like a person, start in Claude and paste the result into the Google file. If the words have to sit where the file already is, Gemini's convenience can beat a better voice that you would only paste in later.

The other writing tools

ChatGPT is second. The tagline is OpenAI's general-purpose chat model. It is still the generalist for drafts and rewrites. As of the 7 October 2026 rollout, ChatGPT can answer with GPT-6 Intelligent UI: text plus charts, buttons, and small tools in the reply. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. The models behind Work and Codex did not change with that release. The default voice is still even, and a careful draft still wants an edit. The page that starts from ChatGPT is ChatGPT alternatives.

Grammarly is fourth. The tagline is an editor for clarity, tone, and grammar. It is an editor, not a writer. Use it to catch tone, clarity, and grammar on text you already wrote. Generating the piece from scratch is not why it earns a spot. The head-to-head with the first writing pick is Claude vs Grammarly.

Notion AI is fifth. The tagline is writing help inside a Notion doc. It is worth it when the document is already in Notion and you want a summary, a rewrite, or a messy page cleaned up in place. It is a poor standalone writing tool. The page is Notion AI alternatives.

Which sentence you are in

"The draft has to sound like a person" is Claude. "The file is already in Google" is Gemini. "I will edit a generalist rewrite" is ChatGPT. "I already wrote it and I want a last pass" is Grammarly. "The page is already in Notion" is Notion AI. "I need links I can click" is Perplexity on Best for Research. Gemini is not on that ranking. A hard science problem points to Argon, which is not the ordinary writing rank.

Check Claude (opens in a new tab) and Gemini (opens in a new tab) before you pay. The rank will not tell you the invoice.
