ChatGPT vs Claude

Updated

Which AI tool should I use? Three questions, then a pick from the ranked lists.

Someone comparing ChatGPT and Claude is usually deciding whether the draft has to sound like a person. On Best for Writing the editorial order is Claude, then ChatGPT, then Gemini, then Grammarly, then Notion AI. This page is the two-tool cut. Gemini stays the Google-file draft. Grammarly stays the last pass. Notion AI stays the page that already lives in Notion.

The verdict: open Claude (opens in a new tab) when tone is the deliverable. Open ChatGPT (opens in a new tab) when you want a generalist draft or rewrite and you will edit the even voice. Both are marked as having a free plan on this site. This page does not quote a dollar amount, a token rate, or a quality score.

The full five-tool walk is Best AI writing tool. The three-way with Gemini is ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini. The other Gemini pairs are ChatGPT vs Gemini and Claude vs Gemini. The page that starts from Claude is Claude alternatives. The page that starts from ChatGPT is ChatGPT alternatives. If the job is a diff in a repository, that is a different product pair: ChatGPT vs Claude for coding and the coding list Best for Vibe Coding.

Leave ChatGPT when the voice is the point

Claude is first. The tagline is Anthropic's chat model. It is still the one to open for a long draft that has to sound like a person. Claude Haiku 5.5, launched 7 October 2026, is the cheap high-volume model in the same family, not the reason this rank exists. The note is Claude Haiku 5.5 is Anthropic's new small model. Claude is weaker when the job is searching the web and citing this afternoon's news.

Use Claude when a careful note, a long draft, or a rewrite has to sound like someone. Leave it when the job is ordinary and you will edit an even voice, when the file is already in Google, or when you only need a grammar check. Haiku 5.5 does not replace that choice.

Leave Claude when you want the generalist

ChatGPT is second. The tagline is OpenAI's general-purpose chat model. It is still the generalist for drafts and rewrites. As of the 7 October 2026 rollout, ChatGPT can answer with GPT-6 Intelligent UI: text plus charts, buttons, and small tools in the reply. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. The models behind Work and Codex did not change with that release. The note is GPT-6 brings Intelligent UI to ChatGPT. The default voice is still even, and a careful draft still wants an edit.

Use ChatGPT when the job is ordinary and you are already in that chat. An interactive reply is not a finished essay. Leave when the voice, the picture, or the citations are the point. The image rank and the research rank are different lists. ChatGPT is third on Best for Images and fifth on Best for Research.

The other writing tools

Gemini is third. The tagline is Google's chat model, next to Docs and Gmail. It is convenient when the draft lives next to Gmail and Docs. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can also use Gemini 4 Argon here, the 13 October 2026 frontier model for hard coding, science, and agent work. For ordinary prose the voice is still flatter than Claude. The page that starts from Gemini is Gemini alternatives.

Grammarly is fourth. The tagline is an editor for clarity, tone, and grammar. It is an editor, not a writer. Use it to catch tone, clarity, and grammar on text you already wrote. Generating the piece from scratch is not why it earns a spot. The page is Best Grammarly alternatives. The head-to-head with the first writing pick is Claude vs Grammarly.

Notion AI is fifth. The tagline is writing help inside a Notion doc. It is worth it when the document is already in Notion and you want a summary, a rewrite, or a messy page cleaned up in place. It is a poor standalone writing tool. The page is Notion AI alternatives.
