ChatGPT vs Claude for coding
Last updated
People ask ChatGPT versus Claude for coding as if the two chat apps were the coding products. On this site they are not. ChatGPT (opens in a new tab) is the second pick on Best for Writing, a generalist for drafts. Claude (opens in a new tab) is the first pick on that same writing list, for a draft that has to sound like a person. The coding list is a different page, Best for Vibe Coding. The products on it that belong to these two companies are Claude Code (opens in a new tab) and OpenAI Codex (opens in a new tab). This guide says which sentence you are actually in. It does not quote a subscription price, and it does not invent a benchmark between the chat apps.
The editor-versus-cloud comparison that includes GitHub Copilot is GitHub Copilot vs OpenAI Codex vs Cursor. The 2026 assistant framing is Best AI coding assistant in 2026. If the "code" is really an email about the code, use Best AI tool for writing emails.
The chat apps are not the coding rank
Cursor is the first editorial pick when the agent has to live in the editor, apply a multi-file change, and let you reject hunks. Claude Code is second. Codex is third. GitHub Copilot is fourth. Replit is fifth. ChatGPT and Claude, the chat products, are not on that list. Using either chat window to paste a function is something people do. It is not a rank we publish, because the thing you review is a reply, not a diff in the project.
If the question is "which chat window should I paste this snippet into," you have left the coding list and you are close to the writing list. Claude is first there when the result has to sound like a person. ChatGPT is the generalist. A code review comment that has to be polite is writing. A change that has to land in the repository is coding. Name which one you will look at before you pick the product.
Claude Code, when the repo is the point
Claude Code (opens in a new tab) is the Claude product on the coding list. It is the better fit when the job is "go do this in the repo" from a terminal, not a completion popping up as you type. It plans well across a large codebase. It is the wrong pick if you want inline diffs as the main interface. That is a different product from claude.ai, even though both are Anthropic's. Do not treat a good chat answer as evidence that the terminal agent is the one you want, or the other way around.
Claude Haiku 5.5 does not change that split. Anthropic launched it on 7 October 2026 as the cheap, fast, small model, with a 1 million token context window on the API. The note is Claude Haiku 5.5 is Anthropic's new small model. It is a model id, claude-haiku-5-5. It is not Claude Code, and it is not why Claude is first for prose. On 15 October 2026 fast mode for Claude Opus 5.5 left research preview. That is an API speed option at a higher token price, described in Claude Opus 5.5 fast mode leaves research preview. Same model, faster output tokens. It does not move Claude Code up or down the coding list.
Codex, not the ChatGPT tab
OpenAI Codex (opens in a new tab) is third on the coding list. It is a capable agent with a cloud sandbox and a GitHub loop, useful when the task should run away from your laptop. Inside an editor you already have open, Cursor is still the tighter edit-and-reject loop. Codex is the OpenAI product to compare with Claude Code. ChatGPT is not.
On 7 October 2026 OpenAI rolled GPT-6 Intelligent UI out in the Chat tab. A reply can include text, charts, buttons, and small tools. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says the models behind Work and Codex are not part of that release. The note is GPT-6 brings Intelligent UI to ChatGPT. A new chat interface is not a new Codex.
On 8 October 2026 OpenAI added an Ultrafast service tier for gpt-6.1-sol in the Responses API. It shortens the wait between output tokens if you call that model directly. The note is OpenAI adds Ultrafast mode for GPT-6.1 Sol. It is available to API users, subject to rate limits. It does not turn ChatGPT into the coding rank, and it does not move Codex above Claude Code.
Which one you mean
If you mean the chat apps, we rank them for writing, not for coding. Claude is first for a draft that has to sound like a person. ChatGPT is the generalist, and the 7 October interface update did not include Codex. If you mean the coding products from the same companies, Claude Code is second on Best for Vibe Coding and Codex is third. Cursor is still first when the diff has to stay in the editor. Pick the sentence, then the list.
