ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: which to use for what

Last updated

ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are general models that show up on more than one list here. Treating them as one product with one winner is how people pick the wrong tab. This guide says which to open for which job, using only the rankings already published on Best for Writing, Best for Research, Best for Images, and Best for Vibe Coding. It does not add a new score, and it does not invent a subscription price.

Writing

For a long draft that has to sound like a person, Claude (opens in a new tab) is the first pick on the writing list. It holds a brief and is stronger on tone than the other two. It is the weaker choice when the job is searching the web and citing what happened this afternoon. That job is research, not prose.

ChatGPT (opens in a new tab) is the generalist for drafts and rewrites. The default voice is even, and a careful draft still wants an edit. As of 7 October 2026 the Chat tab can also answer with GPT-6 Intelligent UI: text plus charts, buttons, and small tools. That rollout is written up in GPT-6 brings Intelligent UI to ChatGPT. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. An interactive reply can be the right answer to a question. It is not automatically a finished essay.

Gemini (opens in a new tab) is the convenient writer when the draft already lives next to Gmail and Docs. For ordinary prose the voice is flatter than Claude. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can also reach Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app. Argon is the 13 October 2026 frontier model for hard coding, science, and agent work, described in Gemini 4 Argon is generally available. Use it when the "draft" is really a hard problem. Do not move an ordinary memo off Claude just because Argon exists.

Claude Haiku 5.5, covered in Claude Haiku 5.5 is Anthropic's new small model, is the cheap high-volume model in that family. Anthropic describes it as the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model they have released. It is for volume and latency, including subagents. It is not the model the writing list means when it says to open Claude for the draft.

Research

None of the three is the first pick when you need links you can click. That job is Perplexity (opens in a new tab) on Best for Research. ChatGPT can start a long brief while it keeps working, and you should still check the citations. It reads more like an essay than Perplexity. Gemini 4 Argon is a different job again: hard science, math, and coding, not a sourced tour of the web. If you already have the files, NotebookLM (opens in a new tab) stays inside them. Do not ask Claude or ChatGPT to pretend those files are the whole web.

Images

On Best for Images, ChatGPT is the pick when the picture has to follow a fussy instruction, include readable text, or match a conversation you are already having. It is less beautiful by default than Midjourney (opens in a new tab). Claude and Gemini are not on that image ranking. Gemini 4 Argon is not an image model. Google's fast image model is a separate product, and this site has not ranked it against the five image tools. If the words in the picture must be spelled correctly, the image list points to Ideogram (opens in a new tab), not to a general chat.

Coding

The coding list is about where you review the diff, not which chat window you like. Cursor (opens in a new tab), Claude Code (opens in a new tab), and OpenAI Codex (opens in a new tab) are the tools for that job on Best for Vibe Coding. Gemini 4 Argon can take a hard coding problem through the API. OpenAI's Ultrafast tier for gpt-6.1-sol shortens the wait between output tokens if you call that model directly. Neither fact turns a chat app into the editor. Open the coding guide, Best AI tool for coding, when the artifact you will review is a diff.

How to choose

Name the deliverable in one line. A voiced draft points to Claude. A rewrite, or an answer with a chart you can click, points to ChatGPT. A file that already lives in Google points to Gemini, and a hard science or coding problem points to Argon rather than to a memo. Links you must check point away from all three, toward the research list. A picture points to the image list, where only ChatGPT of these three appears.

Questions people ask

Should I use ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for writing?
On the writing list, Claude is the first pick for a long draft that has to sound like a person. ChatGPT is the generalist for drafts and rewrites. Gemini is the convenient one when the draft already lives next to Gmail and Docs.
Which of the three is for research?
ChatGPT can produce a long brief, and you should still check citations. It is ranked behind tools built to show sources. Gemini 4 Argon is for hard science and coding problems, not a replacement for a sourced web answer.
Does GPT-6 Intelligent UI change every ChatGPT product?
No. The 7 October 2026 rollout is the Chat tab. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says the models behind Work and Codex did not change with that release.
Is Claude Haiku 5.5 the model to open for a careful draft?
No. Haiku 5.5 is the small, high-volume model. The writing rank for Claude is about the draft that has to sound like a person, not about the cheapest model in the family.
