ChatGPT vs Grammarly

ChatGPT and Grammarly are the two names that show up when someone wants help with a paragraph and has not decided whether the paragraph exists yet. They are not the same tool. On Best for Writing the editorial order is Claude, then ChatGPT, then Gemini, then Grammarly, then Notion AI. This page is the generalist against the editor. Claude stays the voice. Gemini stays the file next to Gmail and Docs. Notion AI stays the page that already lives in Notion.
The verdict: open ChatGPT (opens in a new tab) when you want a draft or a rewrite and you will edit the even voice. Open Grammarly (opens in a new tab) when the words already exist and the job is tone, clarity, and grammar. Both are marked as having a free plan on this site. This page does not quote a dollar amount. The page that names the free plans we could verify is Which AI is free to use.
The full five-tool walk is Best AI writing tool. The page that starts from ChatGPT is ChatGPT alternatives. The page that starts from Grammarly is Grammarly alternatives. The head-to-head of the first writing pick and the editor is Claude vs Grammarly. The editor against the Notion page is Grammarly vs Notion AI. The two-tool cut of the first two ranks is ChatGPT vs Claude.
ChatGPT, when you will write and then edit
ChatGPT is second. The tagline is OpenAI's general-purpose chat model. It is still the generalist for drafts and rewrites. As of the 7 October 2026 rollout, ChatGPT can answer with GPT-6 Intelligent UI: text plus charts, buttons, and small tools in the reply. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. The models behind Work and Codex did not change with that release. The default voice is still even, and a careful draft still wants an edit. The note is GPT-6 brings Intelligent UI to ChatGPT.
Use ChatGPT when the page is blank, or when you want a rewrite you will edit. Leave when the sentences already exist and the only job left is tone, clarity, and grammar. An interactive reply is not that last pass. Rank 2 is the generalist, not the editor.
Grammarly, when the draft exists
Grammarly is fourth. The tagline is an editor for clarity, tone, and grammar. Use it to catch tone, clarity, and grammar on text you already wrote. Generating the piece from scratch is not why it earns a spot.
Stay when the words exist and the last pass is the job, including a last pass on a draft ChatGPT wrote. Leave when the page is blank. An editor cannot be the alternative to a missing paragraph. Rank 4 is a different product from the writer. Do not expect Grammarly to be the generalist because the draft still wants an edit. The list has already named ChatGPT for that sentence, and Claude when the voice has to sound like a person.
What this page is not
Claude is first. The tagline is Anthropic's chat model. It is still the one to open for a long draft that has to sound like a person. Claude Haiku 5.5, launched 7 October 2026, is the cheap high-volume model in the same family, not the reason this rank exists. Claude is weaker when the job is searching the web and citing this afternoon's news. If the voice is the job, you have left this pair. The page is Claude vs Grammarly. The page that starts from Claude is Claude alternatives.
Gemini is third. The tagline is Google's chat model, next to Docs and Gmail. It is convenient when the draft lives next to Gmail and Docs. For ordinary prose the voice is still flatter than Claude. A Google file is a different container from a grammar pass. The page is ChatGPT vs Gemini. The page that starts from Gemini is Gemini alternatives.
Notion AI is fifth. The tagline is writing help inside a Notion doc. It is worth it when the document is already in Notion and you want a summary, a rewrite, or a messy page cleaned up in place. It is a poor standalone writing tool. The page is Grammarly vs Notion AI. The page that starts from Notion AI is Notion AI alternatives.
