Best AI tool for a long draft

A long draft, on this site, is a piece of prose that has to sound like a person. It is not a short email, and it is not a grammar pass on sentences that already exist. The ranked list is Best for Writing. The category line is models and editors for a draft, a rewrite, and the last pass on prose. This page applies that list to the long piece. It does not invent a reading score, a word limit, or a price.
The full walk of the same five is Best AI writing tool. The short-note version is Best AI tool for writing emails. The three-way of the chat models is ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini. The head-to-head of the writer and the editor is Claude vs Grammarly. The top three on the writing list can sit on another site: Embed this top 3.
Sound like a person
Claude is first. It is still the one to open for a long draft that has to sound like a person. The tagline is Anthropic's chat model. The failure mode on this list is the opposite of a stiff template: Claude is weaker when the job is searching the web and citing this afternoon's news. A long draft that needs today's fact is a research job first.
Claude Haiku 5.5, launched 7 October 2026, is the cheap high-volume model in the same family. The note is Anthropic Claude Haiku 5.5 announcement. It is not why Claude is first here. The page that starts from Claude is Claude alternatives. Use Claude (opens in a new tab) for the long draft.
The generalist rewrite
ChatGPT is second. It is still the generalist for drafts and rewrites. The tagline is OpenAI's general-purpose chat model. As of the 7 October 2026 rollout, ChatGPT can answer with GPT-6 Intelligent UI: text plus charts, buttons, and small tools in the reply. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. The models behind Work and Codex did not change with that release. The note is ChatGPT 6 Intelligent UI.
The default voice is still even, and a careful draft still wants an edit. ChatGPT is the right second pick when you already live in it and the piece is a memo or a rewrite you will edit. It is the wrong pick when the only requirement is that the long piece sound like a person. That is the first rank. Use ChatGPT (opens in a new tab) when the generalist rewrite is enough.
Next to the file you already have
Gemini is third. It is convenient when the draft lives next to Gmail and Docs. The tagline is Google's chat model, next to Docs and Gmail. That convenience is the whole argument for writing the long piece there: the file is already open, and you are not pasting between tabs. For ordinary prose the voice is still flatter than Claude. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can also use Gemini 4 Argon here. Argon, generally available on 13 October 2026, is the frontier model for hard coding, science, and agent work, not a reason to move a normal essay. If the words have to sit in a Google file you already share, Gemini's convenience can beat a better voice that you would only paste in later. If the words have to sound like a person, start in Claude and paste the result. Use Gemini (opens in a new tab) when the file is the reason.
Edit what you already wrote
Grammarly is fourth. It is an editor, not a writer. The tagline is an editor for clarity, tone, and grammar. Use it to catch tone, clarity, and grammar on text you already wrote. Generating the piece from scratch is not why it earns a spot. For a long draft, that is often the last pass: you wrote the piece, or Claude did, and you want a check before you send it. It is a poor place to invent the manuscript. The page that starts from Grammarly is Grammarly alternatives. Use Grammarly (opens in a new tab) after the draft exists.
Notion AI is fifth. The tagline is writing help inside a Notion doc. It is worth it when the document is already in Notion and you want a summary, a rewrite, or a messy page cleaned up in place. A poor standalone writing tool. Do not start a long draft there unless the source material already lives on the page. The page that starts from Notion is Notion AI alternatives. Use Notion AI (opens in a new tab) when the page is already the document.
How to choose
If the long draft has to sound like a person, open Claude. If you want a generalist rewrite and you already have ChatGPT open, stay there and edit the even voice. If the file is already in Google, Gemini is the convenient third, not the better prose. If the words exist and you only need a check, use Grammarly. If the page already lives in Notion, clean it up there. The rank numbers live on Best for Writing.
