Best AI tool for inline code completion

Which AI tool should I use? Three questions, then a pick from the ranked lists.

Inline code completion, on this site, is a suggestion that appears as you type. It is not an agent that takes a multi-file change and waits for you to reject hunks. It is not a terminal session you send into the repo. The ranked list is Best for Vibe Coding. Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, and Replit are there for describing a change, then reviewing the diff. This page is the completion that shows up in the line. It does not invent a benchmark, and it does not quote a price.

The longer walk is Best AI tool for coding. The editor against the cloud sandbox is Cursor vs OpenAI Codex. The page that starts from the completion seat is GitHub Copilot alternatives. The editor-versus-terminal comparison is Cursor vs Claude Code. The terminal-versus-completion comparison is Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot. The seat-versus-cloud-versus-editor comparison is GitHub Copilot vs OpenAI Codex vs Cursor. The empty-folder job is Best AI tool to build an app. The top three on the coding list can sit on another site: Embed this top 3.

The completion in the line

GitHub Copilot is fourth. It is still the seat most teams already pay for. Inline completions are reliable, and agent mode now covers routine edits. The tagline is the coding assistant most teams already have a seat for. Rank 4 is the completion job. Cursor is first because the category's test is an agent in the editor that you can reject hunk by hunk, and Copilot is explicitly not that loop. If the suggestion in the line is the product you wanted, open GitHub Copilot (opens in a new tab). Leave when the change spans the project and you need to reject hunks, when the job is a terminal plan, or when the task should run away from the laptop.

On 28 October 2026 Copilot Fusion became generally available, and paid plans gained a connected cloud session that runs in a sandbox. The notes are GitHub Copilot Fusion is generally available and the connected cloud session. GitHub's Coding Agent Index figure for Fusion Max does not move this rank. It is not the in-editor reject-hunk loop, which is why the editorial rank stays at 4. The page that starts from Copilot is GitHub Copilot alternatives.

A diff is not a completion

Cursor is first. It is the closest thing to a default when the agent has to live in the editor. It can take a multi-file change, apply it, and let you reject hunks without leaving the project. Vague prompts still send it wandering, and it will spend tokens proving it. The tagline is an editor with an agent that edits across files. Use Cursor (opens in a new tab) when you will review a diff. Do not open it because you wanted the next line to appear as you type and nothing else. That was Copilot's sentence. The page that starts from Cursor is Cursor alternatives. The two-way with the terminal is Cursor vs Claude Code.

Claude Code is second. It is best when the job is "go do this in the repo" from a terminal, not a completion popping up as you type. It plans well across a large codebase. It is the wrong pick if you want inline diffs as the main interface. The tagline is a terminal coding agent from Anthropic. Use Claude Code (opens in a new tab) for the terminal plan. The page that starts from Claude Code is Claude Code alternatives. The two-way with the completion seat is Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot.

A cloud loop, or a new app

OpenAI Codex is third. It is a capable agent with a cloud sandbox and a GitHub loop, useful when the task should run away from your laptop. On 8 October 2026 OpenAI added an Ultrafast service tier for gpt-6.1-sol in the Responses API, which shortens the wait between output tokens if you call that model directly. Inside an editor you already have open, Cursor is still the tighter edit-and-reject loop. The tagline is a coding agent that can work in a cloud sandbox. A completion in the line is not a sandbox. Use OpenAI Codex (opens in a new tab) when the work should leave the laptop. The page that starts from Codex is OpenAI Codex alternatives. The terminal-versus-cloud comparison is Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex.

Replit Agent is fifth. It is the fastest path from a sentence to a hosted app when you are starting from an empty folder. It is the wrong tool for a private codebase you already maintain. The tagline is "Builds and hosts an app from a prompt." An inline completion assumes a file you are already typing in. Use Replit Agent (opens in a new tab) for the empty folder. The task page is Best AI tool to build an app. The page that starts from Replit is Replit alternatives.

How to choose

If you want a reliable completion as you type, and the seat is one the team already pays for, open Copilot. If you want a multi-file change and a hunk you can reject, open Cursor. If you want a terminal plan across a large codebase, open Claude Code. If the task should run in a cloud sandbox, open Codex. If you are starting from an empty folder, open Replit.
